MASANORI WATCHED TATSUO storm out of the apartment, phone pressed to his ear as he begun making arrangements to get back at Asano. His own phone sat on the kitchen bench, plugged into the charger so that Masanori could keep reaching out to Shibata. But the longer his calls went unanswered, the harder it was to believe that their lover had avoided the inferno that had engulfed the apartment building.

His emotions were in turmoil, caught between anger and despair. He wanted to stalk the streets of Tokyo himself, hunt down Asano and kill the bastard. It wouldn’t be a quick death either, but one that befitted all the pain he’d put Masanori and Tatsuo through... a death filled with pain that slowly tore at the man’s mind as he begged for a bullet to end his suffering.

He wanted Asano to suffer.

Except they had a plan.

And Tatsuo wasn’t prepared to deviate from it.

But if Shibata was—he inhaled sharply, hands curling on the benchtop while his jaw clenched tight—if Shibata was dead, then their plan wouldn’t matter anymore.

Shaking his head, Masanori walked away from his phone and the unanswered messages that stared up at him tauntingly from the screen. He dropped onto the couch and picked up the remote, flicking the tv on and switching it to a local news channel. Fire engulfing an apartment building was always going to make the news, even more so once the reporters learned the place was filled with students and that all the doors had been barred to make sure no one escaped. At first, fingers would be pointed at the building’s owners, trawling through whatever documents they could find while trying to make claims of slack adherence to building codes...but those theories—as painful as they’d be to hear—would soon be quashed as those persistent reporters dug deep into the buildings history and realised that one of the occupants wasn’t a student... but a police detective who’d graced their pages almost a year ago.

Then attention would turn toward the yakuza while rumours of a gang war spread like wildfire through the city’s streets.

He forced himself to watch the footage. Watched the flames tear out of the top floor as the fire swiped its sooty fingers across the sky. Watched as the fire fighters fought in vain to bring it under control, before finally accepting defeat and focused instead on protecting the surrounding buildings. His fingernails dug into his thighs as pictures of the buildings charred remains were displayed on screen, not wanting to imagine the horror its occupants had suffered while wishing desperately that Shibata hadn’t been there at all.

Masanori’s phone remained silent.

How long did he cling to those wishes?

How long until he gave hope?

Until they both needed to accept the truth.
